hi all,

solved the problem on my leaking gear pump so now i can to complete my setup of this pump/motor to use on my centrifuge setup.

i have a TEEL pump:



the pump has 1/2inch ports for the hoses to fit in so the potential to move any liquid is pretty good but i dont want to force the motor and the pump if possible.

my motor is a 1/3hp dayton that i pickup at a garage sale ; the follow told me he was using it to run his oil furnace and i believed him because he was selling the burner as well. the motor is very clean and the seller claimed it had just under 2 season of use; but to be on the safe side i do not want to force the motor. the motor came with a 3.5" pully and was wondering what pully is needed for a proper balance.

What volume does it pump per turn?
What flow rate do you need?
What is the rpm of the motor?

i used gasket paper from Fel-pro. purchased the 1/32 thickness.

specs on the pump:

I have a Teel pump like that on my setup and I use a 5 1/2" pulley. My pump only has 1/4" ports on the sides, so it is much smaller of a pump. My motor is also a 1/3 furnace motor. You are going to need a very big pulley on your pump to get the right gearing.

Two suggestions, you can resize the picture in Microsoft picture manager (comes with Windows, unless you have Vista) or you can change the file size setting on your digital camera. There is usually a setting for e-mail pictures. Makes them 640X480, a nice size for e-mailing and posting here on the forum. HTH

can you post picture from the pully side.

my pump also comes from a furnace setup and the gear it came with was a 31/2 , what size is yours?

you think i should use a 7" pully because my port size is 1/2" but i can always reduce it.

No, I am not able to take any more pics right now because I don't have a camera, those were taken 6 months ago. The pulley on my motor is as small as I could get, the pump was either a 5/12 or 6. Ya I would go at least a 7" or bigger for that pump, there is allot of flow. Make sure you have the relief valve setup and functioning.

Assuming you want the pump to produce 8.9 gpm @ 100 PSI, it needs 1.5 HP to produce 100 PSI, so you need to multiply the force by 4.5 to drive it with a 1/3 HP motor. So, whatever size you choose for the motor pulley, the pump pulley must be 4.5 times greater diameter. For example, the very smallest recommended motor pulley diameter of 3" requires a 13.5" pump pulley to provide 1.5 HP for 100 PSI.

Doing this your going to end up with a flow and pressure to power a centrifuge 4 times bigger.

I hate to be the barrier of bad new, but you either have to use a very big pulley on that pump, or buy a bigger centrifuge and bigger motor (unless you want to waste power sending oil back through the relief valve) or buy a smaller pump. I would try to find a smaller pump with 1/4 ports like mine. Or if you aren't concerned about portability do the bigger pulley, but reducing the pulley size might not do it because these gear pumps leak back slow, but if you are pumping at low RPM you are more susceptible to leak back and you won't get the pressure you need.

If the output is too much , just set up a bypass cuicuit for the excess flow .

wow its getting messy good thing i have a backup.

i wont purchase another pump thats for sure but 2 pullies i can handle.

the hose size is 5/8 right now (not sure if that means anything) and i can reach 100psi but this is on a vane pump which was my backup pump till my gear pump was up and running.

so i should have a 1:3 ratio to reach 100psi if my motor is 1/3 hp?

Well the gears in a gear pump are not completely sealed (leak back, not a technical term), so to make up for this you have to turn those gears fast to exceed the liquid slipping by those gears. So slowing down a high flow gear pump to make up for a low flow centrifuge does not solve any problems because you won't be able to keep up the pressure. The only option is to run it at normal speed and put in a relief valve to return the excess oil to the intake side of the pump, wasting energy.

I've been trying to get my setup going and have ended up with a 1/2hp motor with a 2" pulley, a brown and sharp pump with a 4" pulley and this thing puts out the pressure. I have a cutout for overflow when i'm running full blast. I have a spinclean ff25le filterfuge. Right now it's going full blast. I started with 2" pulleys on both the motor and pump but that overloaded the motor till the thermal overload switch kicked the motor off. Since I went with the 2" and 4" pulley, no more overheating problems. My inlet and outlet hoses are both 3/8".

I was under the assumption that you were using the Diesel Craft centrifuge.

Make sure you don't heat up the motor because you will fry it over time. I just did on my 1/3 hp G.E. motor and I am running a 5 1/2 pulley and a 2" on the motor side for just a small diesel Craft OC20.

Nope, a spinclean/filterfuge. I am thinking of going to a larger pulley on the pump. How hot was the motor that fried? I keep checking mine and it gets up to around 125 after running for 3+ hours, then stays about that temp. I have a fan I keep running on the pump as long as it's running. If I go 1" larger on the pump pulley, how much longer do I need to get the belt?

If you can't hold you hand on it for a minute when it's running, it's too hot.
Best way to figure out pulley size, is keep buying bigger ones until you get to a size where you can't get the pressure up high enough, then go down one size where you get good pressure. This way you won't be burning out your motor or wasting power sending oil through the relief valve.

Well I finished 1 batch of oil yesterday and started another batch this morning. I sure am glad these centrifuge's came thru when they did. Just wish I had one a few years ago and I wouldn't have had to use so many filters. Just finished the second batch, 80+gallons in 2 days. I still think I'll go with a bigger pulley on the pump. I did check the CF temp while I was pulling off the good oil. I was reading 151 degrees.

I changed the pulley size on the pump to 6 1/2" with a 2" on the motor. Working better than ever. Pushing 80 to 100 psi with the bypass closed. While cleaning the CF i noticed the "o" ring was about to come apart. Tomorrow I'll cut and reglue it. Other than that, the only complaint is it's start to vibrate and make a lot of noise. I'm going to isolate it with nylon washers. There isn't any sideplay in the CF to the shaft.

I have a carbonator pump as I have seen with DieselCraft CF and wonder what size of particles in the oil stream affects the longevity of the pump.
